Grammar Schools in Wiltshire

Wiltshire Council itself sets no county-wide test or standard — its own admissions scheme only requires that grammar schools let a child sit their entrance exam and tell parents the outcome before preferences are due. The actual testing is organised by the schools themselves: South Wilts Grammar School (girls) and Bishop Wordsworth's School (boys), both in Salisbury, form the South West Grammar Schools Consortium and share one 11+ process using GL Assessment papers in verbal reasoning, mathematics and English. Each paper is age-standardised and the three scores added together into one final score, and a child is then determined to have either met or not met "the required academic standard" for that year — but South Wilts' own current policy does not publish what number that standard actually is, leaving it to be set annually rather than fixed in writing. As elsewhere, meeting the standard only makes a child eligible to be considered: an oversubscribed school still allocates its limited places (160 across Years 7-11 at South Wilts) using its own published oversubscription criteria.
