Grammar Schools in Essex

The nine CSSE (Consortium of Selective Schools in Essex) grammar and partially-selective schools jointly set and mark one shared entrance test rather than each running its own. A child sits two papers — English and mathematics — each marked out of 60 and weighted equally, then age-standardised (converted onto a scale centred on 100 with a standard deviation of 15, so a child's age in months within the school year doesn't disadvantage them against older classmates) before being combined into one total score. CSSE itself sets only a hard floor: no member school will offer a place to a child scoring under 303 in total. Above that floor, CSSE does not set one single "qualifying" cutoff the way some other counties do — each of the nine schools is its own admission authority and sets its own effective cutoff every year based on how many children apply and how they rank against that school's own published oversubscription criteria (e.g. priority area/distance, siblings, faith), so the score actually needed to get an offer varies by school and by whether a family lives inside or outside that school's priority area.
